Much of Peter Shostak's art reflects the activities and landscape of his youth. He was born and raised on a farm in North Eastern Alberta. After completing high school in 1961 he left home to attend the University of Alberta, majoring in Art Education.
Four years later he became a junior high school teacher, supplementing his income by teaching adult drawing and painting classes at night.
In 1969 Peter moved to Victoria and took a teaching position at the University of Victoria. He stayed there for
ten years, but found that he was greatly limiting the time he wanted to spend on his own art. In 1979 Peter left teaching to become a successful full time artist.
Since then he has published three books and has received numerous awards and
recognition for his remarkable work over the years.
"In his life and his art, Peter Shostak depicts what it means to be Canadian. He honours the memory of all our past lives."
-Canadian Author W.D. Valgardson-
