(1923-2000)
In 1923 George Culley was born in Regina, into a family with little interest in the arts. Culley's creativity was encouraged by an Englishman named Percy Compton who supported George's natural affinity to the arts. In school George
had the tendency to skip all other classes except art.
At age eighteen he was stationed in Scotland during the second world war, where he was assigned by the captain to paint scenes in the officers barracks and shipboard canvasses. A skipper
recognized George's talent and prodded him to attend the Glasgow School of Art. George did just that, studying vigorously during his spare time overseas.
A survivor of D-Day, George returned to Canada and set up a lumber business with his brother.
After many successful years as an entrepreneur, George sold the company and began to successfully paint full time.
George described his work as free-style impressionism.
"The pleasure George received from painting resulted from the enjoyment
that it gave others."
